When Are Dental Implants Used?
Dental implants are used to restore the appearance of a full and healthy smile and keep your teeth from shifting into unhealthy positions. They also restore your biting and speaking capabilities, so you no longer have to deal with mechanical issues presented by gaps in your smile. Dental implants can be crafted from materials that are made to look natural and match the appearance of your other teeth, so they’re hardly noticeable.
If you’ve had a tooth pulled or knocked out, then a dental implant for tooth replacement might be a good option for you. They’re permanent solutions to your missing teeth, and they don’t rely on surrounding teeth to anchor them down. Implants provide a more permanent solution with less hassle than dentures, too.
What’s the Procedure Like?
Getting a dental implant is typically done in several steps.
1. Any existing tooth left in the socket is removed, and if a bone graft is needed for the implant to secure to, it is placed and left to heal.
2. Once the bone graft is healed, you’ll come back for the implant process to begin. A titanium post is secured to your jaw, a healing cap put in place, and your wound stitched up. Then, you’re sent home to heal for anywhere from two to six months to ensure the post is securely integrated with the bone.
3. When the post has healed and is secure, an abutment will be added to the post to hold tooth replacements. A mold will be taken and your replacement tooth crafted. Once complete, your replacement tooth will be secured with either dental cement or a screw.
