What Are Veneers and What Are They For?

Dental laminate veneers are supremely thin pieces of porcelain that are permanently affixed to the front of your tooth in order to restore the appearance of your smile. While they can come in a variety of materials, we at East Springs Dental choose to use only porcelain for the many aesthetic benefits it offers, including natural coloring, durability, and appearance.

Laminate veneers can be used to solve many problems you may be having with your dental aesthetics. If you have a small gap or space between two of your teeth, getting laminate veneers placed on the front of your tooth can cover the gap. The gap will still be there, but no one will be able to notice it.

Veneers are also great for restoring the appearance of a tooth that is heavily stained, either from colored foods, coffee, or nicotine. Since the porcelain mimics a natural tooth, no one will be able to tell it’s not your actual tooth. They can also be used for covering minor chips and cracks, flawlessly giving your tooth a smooth and unblemished appearance. Veneers can also be used as a replacement for enamel, as it doesn’t grow back but is often removed over time from brushing and acidic foods.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Getting a laminate veneer is a relatively simple process that doesn’t usually require numbing, though it can be provided if you’re very nervous or sensitive to pain. When you come into our office to have your veneer put in place, we’ll trim off a very small amount of enamel on the front of your tooth to allow room for the veneer to be placed. Once the enamel is removed, we take a mold of the surface of your tooth and send it to our lab to have your permanent veneer crafted. While the veneer is being made, we’ll be able to fit you with a temporary veneer to help protect your tooth since the enamel has been stripped from its surface.

When the permanent laminate veneer is ready for placement, we’ll remove the temporary veneer and install the permanent veneer with realistic touches. It’ll be washed and allowed to air dry, then we’ll be able to apply the veneer to your tooth. Once placed, the veneer will be light cured for a minute on all sides to help cement it in place.
